Aligning File Pairs

The T-Windows allow you to align file pair(s) and add the resulting translation units to the translation memory. Translator's Workbench must be running to perform this task.

Note: You cannot align files with T-Window for Clipboard.

Warning: To get the correct alignment results you may need to adjust the segmentation rules in Translator's Workbench for T-Window.

To Align File Pairs:

  1. Make sure that Translator's Workbench is running. If it is not, the Align option in the Tools menu is greyed out.

  2. Select Align from the Tools menu. The Align File Pairs dialog box opens.

  3. Click Add to add files to the File Pair(s) to Align list. The Add File Pair dialog box appears.

  4. Click Browse to choose the source and target file. Click OK to return to the Align File Pairs dialog box. Repeat these steps for every file pair you want to align.

  5. Select Update Current Translation Memory if you wish to add the aligned translation units to the current translation memory.

  6. Select Create a new Translation Memory with current Translation Memory as Template if you wish to create a new translation memory that is based on the currently opened translation memory. The aligned translation units are added to the new translation memory.

  7. Select Update existing translation units and Always add homonym translation units depending on whether and how you want the translation memory updated with the translation units from the aligned files.

  8. If you are using T-Window for Resources, there are two extra options in the Include box.

  9. Check the Comments check box if you also wish to align comments that are included in the aligned files. If you do not check Comments, comments will not be aligned.

  10. Check the Combo and list box items check box if you also wish to align these resource items during alignment. This is selected by default. If you deselect this, these resources will not be aligned..

  1. Click Align to start the alignment. If you are using T-Window for Excel, the Specify Range dialog box appears. You can select which parts of the workbook you wish to align. You can process the whole workbook or specific worksheets and all or specific rows and columns.

  2. A progress indicator appears that shows the progress of the alignment process.

  3. An information dialog box appears with the number of aligned pairs that were added to the translation memory. Click OK to return to T-Window.

To Check the Alignment:

Unlike WinAlign, you do not have the opportunity to review the aligned segments before the results are imported into a translation memory. However, you can check the alignment results before adding them to your working translation memory.

  1. In the Align File Pairs dialog box choose the Create a new Translation Memory with current Translation Memory as Template option.

  2. After the alignment is finished, switch to Translator's Workbench. Select Maintenance from the File menu to check the translation units.

  3. If there are any incorrectly aligned translation units, edit the source or target files to correct the problem.

  4. Repeat steps 1-3 until you are satisfied.

  5. When you are satisfied with the alignment results, open your working translation memory in Translator's Workbench. In the Align File Pairs dialog box in T-Window choose the Update Current Translation Memory option. This adds the new translation units to your current translation memory when you run the alignment.
