Pre-translating

Use the Translate command to automatically translate all segments in the source file(s) that reach a certain match value in the current translation memory. This is known as pre-translation.

Note: You cannot pre-translate files with T-Window for Clipboard.

Warning: To get the correct pre-translation results you may need to adjust the segmentation rules in Translator's Workbench for T-Window.

To pre-translate file(s):

  1. Make sure that Translator's Workbench is running. If it is not, the Translate option is greyed out.

  2. Create a new project. All pre-translation is done on project files.

  3. Select Translate from the Tools menu. The Translate Projects dialog box opens.

  4. Click Add to add files to the Project(s) to Translate list. The Add Projects dialog box appears.

  5. Select the project that you want to pre-translate. Click Open to add the file and return to the Translate Projects dialog box.

  6. Click the Save button to save the current list of files to a *.lst file. It can then be loaded as a group the next time you wish to analyse or pre-translate the files without having to select each file separately by clicking the Load button.

  7. Use the % or higher Match Value field to set the minimum match value for segments to be translated. If you set it to 100%, only those segments from the documents that have an exact match in the current translation memory are translated. If you set it to a lower value, say, 95%, all segments whose match value is higher than 95% are translated. The Translate function takes account of penalties set in the translation memory options.

  8. If you want to pre-translate documents that have already been partially translated with Translator's Workbench, you can decide what happens to the pre-translated document and the corresponding translation memory by selecting Don't if neither are to be updated, Update TM if only the translation memory is to be updated and Update Document if the document is to be updated.

  9. If you are using T-Window for Resources, there are two extra options in the Include box.

  10. Check the Comments check box if you wish comments to be treated as translatable text. If you do not check Comments, comments are treated as untranslatable text.

  11. Check the Combo and list box items check box if you wish the text in these to be treated as translatable text. This is selected by default. If you deselect this, these resources are treated as untranslatable text.

  1. Click Translate to start the pre-translation. If you are using T-Window for Excel, the Specify Range dialog box appears. You can choose to translate several worksheets, columns or words at a time. You can select which parts of the workbook you wish to pre-translate. You can process the whole workbook or specific worksheets and all or specific rows and columns.

  2. A progress indicator displays the progress of the translation process.

Warning: T-Window does not create a backup copy of an existing target language file. If you want to pre-translate a pair of files and keep the existing target file, you should change the name of the target file or create a backup copy of the file before pre-translating.
