Resident Shield Component - Properties Tab

Here you can modify the properties and behavior of the Resident Shield.

The Resident Shield scans files as they are copied, opened and saved. When the Resident Shield discovers a virus in a file that is accessed, it stops the operation currently being performed and does not allow the virus to activate itself. The Resident Shield, loaded into the memory of your computer during system startup, also provides vital protection for the system areas of your computer.

Check the Turn on Resident Shield protection box to activate the Resident Shield. We strongly recommend not unchecking this box unless you have a serious reason!

Other options on this tab include:

Scan all files - select this if you want the Resident Shield to check all files, regardless of their extensions or contents. Scanning all files can be more demanding on system resources, which may adversely affect computer performance.

Scan infectable files - select this if you want the Resident Shield to check all potentially infectable files.

Press the Advanced settings button to open the dialog Resident Shield - Advanced Settings. This dialog serves as a summary of what extensions will be scanned by the Resident Shield; options are not available in AVG Free Edition.

Additional Options

Scan floppy drives - select this if you want the Resident Shield to check the boot sectors of floppy disks.

Use Heuristic Analysis - select this if you want the Resident Shield to use Heuristic Analysis detection method.

On-close scanning - select this if you want the Resident Shield to test files that are downloaded from the Internet or other computer on a local network even if they are not accessed by a local user. While this feature leads to earlier detection of viruses it does not offer any greater protection. Furthermore it is more demanding on system resources, which may adversely affect computer performance.

Scan Potentially Unwanted Programs and Scan Cookies - these options apply to Anti-Spyware feature which is not available in the AVG Free Edition.

Click the OK button to save any changes and close the dialog.

Click the Cancel button to close the dialog without saving any changes.

Click the Apply button to confirm your settings without closing the dialog.
